- Most engine enamels are self-priming. Some makers forbid a primer outright.
- Bodyshop etch primer is rated to 80°C. Under a 300°C enamel it is the layer that fails first.
- Etch primer and epoxy primer do different jobs, and epoxy must not go over etch.
- The primer decision belongs to the data sheet of the topcoat you bought.
Cast iron and aluminium
A block and a head are different metals, and the primer aisle was built for neither. Refinishing primers are written for body panels.
Look at what the etch primers list. Hycote's Etch Primer is a modified acrylic for non-ferrous metals: galvanised, anodised and zinc-coated steel, and aluminium. U-POL's ACID#8 lists bare steel, aluminium, galvanised and zinc-coated steel, polyester filler, GRP and fully cured paint. Neither mentions cast iron.
On an aluminium head, at least both are written for the metal in front of you. On a cast-iron block the paint makers have already answered the question the other way. Hycote describes its engine enamels as one-step and self-priming, and its data sheet says no primer is to be used.
Preparation does the work a primer would. Hycote asks for a detergent or solvent clean, a thorough rinse and dry, a wire brush or wet-and-dry on rust and loose material, and a final solvent wipe. POR-15's route on bare or rusted metal is its Rust Preventive Coating, which is unusual because damp air speeds its cure. It goes on as two thin coats, the second while the first is dry but still slightly tacky, and not above 75% humidity. POR-15 lists its own Engine Enamel among the topcoats that can go over it. Etch and epoxy
These work in different ways and you can't swap one for the other.
Etch primer is thin and acidic. It is there to grip, and it adds almost no thickness. ACID#8 goes on in one or two coats from about 25 cm, builds 15 microns, flashes off in three to five minutes and is dust free in ten to twenty. U-POL says it normally needs no sanding and can be topcoated directly.
Epoxy primer is thicker, slower and two-pack. U-POL's RAPTOR epoxy comes as a 2K aerosol, activated by a button in the base of the can, with about four days of life at 20°C once you've pressed it. It can be topcoated in as little as 30 minutes. Being a two-pack, it carries the safety requirements described under 2K paint.
They don't stack. The epoxy data sheet says flatly: do not apply over acid etch primer.
Then there is heat. Of these products, only Hycote publishes a service temperature for its etch primer, and the figure is 80°C. U-POL gives none for either primer, and a missing figure is no reason to assume a high one. Put an 80°C primer beneath an enamel rated at 300°C and the primer decides how the job ages. It is also the layer you can't see, so the first you know of it is the topcoat lifting.
When to skip primer
Often, and on the maker's own instruction.
Hycote's engine enamels are self-priming and the sheet says to use no primer. POR-15's High Temp coating goes straight onto clean, prepared metal and is stated as incompatible with any primer, including POR-15's own Rust Preventive Coating. That is the same company that wants Rust Preventive Coating under its Engine Enamel. One brand, two products, opposite answers.
VHT goes the other way both times. Its Engine Enamel is a three-can system with a primer under the colour, and FlameProof names SP100 FlameProof Primer as the one to use.
No general rule survives that. The answer is on the data sheet for the topcoat in your hand.
Where people go wrong
Priming under a self-priming enamel feels like extra insurance. It adds a layer the maker never tested.
Mixing systems across brands has the same problem. A primer proven under its own maker's topcoat hasn't been proven under anyone else's, and neither maker will warn you on the tin.
POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating can't be left bare where daylight reaches it. It needs a topcoat against UV.
And a 2K aerosol dies about four days after activation at 20°C, however much is left in the can. Plan the job so the primer and everything that needs it happens inside that window.
